Vertigo (Giddiness)

Vertigo or dizziness is the name given tpo the moving sensation whihc in most cases is a spinning movement. This sensation or dizziness may cause nausea.

Symptoms : A spinning sensation. When this sensation occurs together with an unbearable buzzing in the ears, it is called Meniere Syndrome and is produced by a gradual accumulation of fluid in the inner ear. This Meniere disorder may cause the loss of hearing with time. Only a physician can correctly diagnose this disorder.

Causes : When this spinning or dizzy sensation occurs occasionally, itm ay be due to several factors, like : Too much alcohol, riding on a bus or plane with a lot of movement, a blow on the head, etc.
When dizziness occurs frequently, causes may be from a problem in a part of the inner ear which is called the semi-circular canals where receptacles filled with pilose cells (hair shaped) are found. These hairs detect the movement caused by small crystals in the canals which flow over them.

When these small crystals come to rest in another part of this hairy canal ,with the slightest movement, they will provoke by means of pressure an arroneous message to be transmitted to the brain concerning the position of the head, which will cause dizziness.

How to prevent and cure a hangover

If we were all sensible, we would avoid hangovers by not drinking at all! But what would be the fun in that? So here are some tips to keep you feeling bright and breezy the morning after the night before.

- Eat before you go out.  To keep that hangover at bay, you should eat loads before you get your glad rags on and go to that party. On this occasion only, a fatty meal is beneficial - as fat is digested slowly, and will protect the stomach from the irritating effects of alcohol. A glass of fatty milk slows down the absorption of alcohol.

- Lighten up
Avoid drinks that contain large amounts of 'congeners', as these tend to cause severe hangovers. Generally these are dark coloured drinks such as red wine, brandy, and port. Have some soft drinks too.

And if you have water between each alcoholic tipple, you'll drink less booze and ultimately have a less severe hangover.

But alcohol is also very dehydrating (this is the main cause of a hangover headache) so if you drink water between vodkas you'll be more hydrated and less likely to wake up with a splitting headache.
