| A recently conducted Search Engine study examined the links users followed on the search engine results page. They found that 42% of users clicked the top result, and 8% of users clicked the second result.This confirms previous studies that the number one result gets many more clicks than all other results. |  | In this study, the researchers did a second test, wherein they secretly swapped the order of the top two search hits. The original number two entry in the search engine's prioritization ended up on top, and the top entry was relegated to second place. Although the search results were different, users still clicked on the top entry 34% of the time and on the second hit 12% of the time.

In a recent thread in an online forum webmasters discussed the question how long it takes to get listed in Google. A webmaster had submitted a web site with 15 individual pages to Google six months before and he was still not listed in Google although Googlebot visited his web site on a monthly basis.
It's normal Google behavior that a new web site is not listed in the natural (unpaid) search results for about six months. This Google practice is called the Google sandbox .

Market research company Nielsen//NetRatings has recently released search growth numbers for the top five search engines. AOL and Ask Jeeves rose 15 and 16 percent, respectively, in the number of searches conducted, while Google and Yahoo! maintained single digit growth |

A good way to get insight into the complexity of web design is to compare it to more familiar design disciplines. Like web sites, buildings are designed to support a wide range of experiences, which involves design from the high-level architecture to signage and interior furnishings.
Understanding the compromises made in the design of buildings can help us appreciate the scope of the web design process.
Once we fully appreciate the depth and breadth of the web design problem space and the design discipline that addresses it, I hope our industry will be able to move on from discussing the relative merits of usability science, branding and graphic art, and concentrate on exploring together how we can all work together to do better design. |
