Hyderabad : The centuries-old tamarind tree, which saved nearly 150 lives during the Great Musi Floods in 1908, is likely to get a heritage tag soon. The tree is located on the Musi river bank at Osmania General Hospital (OGH).

The Hyderabad Conservation Committee (HCC) at its general body meeting held on Nov 26 decided to recommend the tree for heritage status.

 

The HCC members will inspect the site where the tree is located and later send a proposal to the government for issuing a notification, committee member Sushil Kumar told TOI.

 

If the government gives a green signal, for the first time a tamarind tree would make it to the heritage list on par with monuments and precincts, he said.

 

Intach has also sent a proposal to HCC for a heritage tag to the tree.
