Abhaya (Kerala based NGO)
Description: Abhaya was born out of a deep concern for the helpless mental patients of the Government Mental Hospitals of Kerala. The relentless efforts of Abhaya focussed the attention of public, the Government, and particularly the judiciary on the pitiable conditions of the Mental Hospitals in Kerala. The most significant achievement of Abhaya was that after 150 years of isolation, the mental hospitals of the state were thrown open to public scrutiny. Since its inception in 1985 Abhaya has been able to arouse public opinion and influence Government policy on the running of mental health institutions. Consequently, the mental health scenario of Kerala is undergoing a healthy change. Abhaya could not confine itself as an advocacy group for long but branched out as a service group taking care of mental patients, women in distress, alcohol and substance dependents and the children of high risk groups.

SEWA - Self Employed Womens Association
Description: It is an organisation of poor, self-employed women workers. These are women who earn a living through their own labour or small businesses. They do not obtain regular salaried employment with welfare benefits like workers in the organised sector. They are the unprotected labour force of our country. SEWA’s main goals are to organise women workers for full emploreliance. Full employment means employment whereby workers obtain work security, income security, food security and social security (at least health care, child care and shelter). SEWA organises women to ensure that every family obtains full employment. By self-reliance we mean that women should be autonomous and self-reliant, individually and collectively, both economically and in terms of their decision-making ability.
